These little pompom birds are messengers of love! They’ll carry your love note in their beaks and deliver it to your Valentine! It’s an easy and fun Valentine’s Day craft project for kids to make for their special friends.

Normally our tutorials show how to create all the features at the wrapping stage so you don’t have to add anything later. You can do that to make the eyes and tails in this tutorial if you’re familiar with it.

But in this one, we’ll make a simple basic pompom first and glue the features on later. This is much easier for beginners and especially children.

We’ll show you how to make little eyes easily without using any plastic eye parts, just with a bit of black yarn.

We used a special part for the beak – a mini clothes peg (available from many craft supply stores) so it can hold a little envelope that will carry your note.

Follow our detailed tutorial below for making a yarn pom pom bird with a special beak

Planning

Decide which color yarn you want to use for your bird.

You can use a single color, two-tone or mixed color yarn for a speckled bird.

See the end of the post to see some patterns to give you ideas.

1.

Make the pompom for the Bird's body

Wrap each half of the Pom Maker in a single color or two colors until full.

Assemble the Pom Maker and finish your pompom.
See ‘How to make a basic pompom’ tutorial if you’re a complete beginner.

Also ‘The best way to tie your pompoms’ tutorial is very useful.

2.

Trim the top to start with

Decide which side is the top of the bird (head & back). Trim that side to form a flat shape.

3.

Shape the body

Trim around where the two colors meet (or imagine the same position if you’re making with a single color) into a drop like shape.

The head of the bird should be round and the tail end should be narrow.

Trim the lower body. Keep the belly part below the head round and trim it narrower towards the tail so the tail rises up.

Trim until it forms a smooth drop shape with a rising tail.

4.

Add the clothes peg beak

Decide the position of the beak. Take a mini clothes peg. Thread a waxed thread through the small metal loop in the middle of it.

Tie it around the metal part leaving an equal length of thread on both sides.

Push the handle end into the pompom (the beak position) and pull the thread all the way around to the opposite side of the pompom.

Pull both ends of the thread lightly so the thread sits well inside the pompom yarn and is taught enough to keep the beak in place. Tie it.

5.

Tail

To make the tail, measure the yarn for the tail first. We’ll wrap the tail yarn around your four fingers and the length of the loop should be a bit more than the double the tail length you want.

Make a few loops and tie it in the middle.

Fold the loop in half and dab some glue around the knot.

Open up the yarn in the tail end of the pompom and insert the glue end.

TIP

Add the tuft

You can add a little tuft to the bird’s head in the same way. (or for wings if you want!)

6.

The Eyes

To make the eyes, take a small piece of black yarn and make one loose knot.

Make another knot on the same spot. Don’t pull it tight. The knot should be slightly loose so it has some volume.

Trim the ends short.

Find the position for the eye and open up the yarn a bit. Dab a little bit of glue inside and carefully place the eye. Press down gently.

Now your bird is ready to carry your message!

7.

Make the envelope

Make the tiny envelope and add a little love note inside.

8.

Add it to the bird

Squeeze open the clothes peg. You’ll need to feel for the end of the peg inside the pompom and squeeze.

Insert the envelope.
